Why You Buy Things You Didn’t Plan To

Hey Reader,

A study was conducted where people were made to choose between 2 hotel rooms. They were priced the same, but one offered free coffee in the morning and the other didn't.

Without a second thought, most people picked the room with the free coffee without even exploring the quality of the rooms.

Another study found that when a budget hotel added free breakfast, its booking preference jumped to 46%, even though travelers had previously favored more prestigious hotels.

The free breakfast was enough to change consumer priorities. Why does this happen?

Consumers disproportionately overvalue items when they're labeled as free. The emotional appeal of getting something for nothing can drive larger or more frequent purchases.

Most importantly, it eliminates the mental calculation of cost versus benefit, making the decision feel effortless and rewarding.

Offering something for free (whether it's a product, service, or trial) can significantly increase customer engagement and drive sales. Once people experience the free offering, they are more inclined to invest in paid products or services later.

To leverage the power of "free" effectively, start by offering something free to attract customers and reduce buying resistance. Create a sense of urgency and excitement around your offers to encourage immediate action.

A great example is free trials offered by subscription-based companies to get users into using their software. And if you end up loving the software, paying for it feels like the obvious next step. We tend to not notice that we're being guided in that direction.
